Enter bore, rod, pressure and flow to see how much force the cylinder delivers, how long the stroke takes and whether the rod can carry the load without buckling.
Pre-sizing and estimating tool: results do not replace design, calculations or reports signed by a licensed professional, nor verification against the applicable codes and standards.
Bars: force. Points: speed. Regenerative trades force for speed.
Euler critical load divided by 3.5 for the chosen rod and mounting, compared with maximum extend force.

The report gathers this page's inputs, results, equations, assumptions and references, with fields for project, engineer and revision. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF.
Multiply pressure by piston area and mechanical efficiency. A 4 in bore at 2,500 psi pushes about 29,800 lbf at 95% efficiency.
On retraction, flow enters the annulus, which is smaller than the bore because the rod takes up part of it. The same flow in less area gives more speed and less force.
A connection where rod-side oil returns to the cap side during extension, increasing speed. Force drops to pressure × rod area.
Important notice: Indus Metrics tools produce estimates and pre-sizing results from the data you enter and from published engineering methods. They do not replace design, calculations or reports signed by a licensed professional engineer (PE), nor verification against the applicable codes, standards and regulations, such as OSHA rules and the ASME codes. Material and fuel properties vary: check manufacturer data or your own process analyses before deciding. By using this site you agree to the Terms of Use.
