Enter period totals or a list of times between failures to get MTBF, MTTR, availability, the probability of running failure-free over the mission time and the failure pattern from the Weibull shape factor.
Pre-sizing and estimating tool: results do not replace design, calculations or reports signed by a licensed professional, nor verification against the applicable codes and standards.
Probability of running without failure up to each time; the dashed line is the exponential model with the same MTBF.
Instantaneous failure risk. Rising means wear-out: age-based preventive replacement can pay off.
Points from Bernard’s median ranks and a least-squares fit. Aligned points mean a good fit.
The report gathers this page's inputs, results, equations, assumptions and references, with fields for project, engineer and revision. In the print dialog, choose Save as PDF.
Divide the period’s operating time by the number of failures. 8,000 h with 6 failures gives an MTBF of about 1,333 h. Do not include downtime in the numerator.
It is the shape factor. Below 1, failures are infant mortality (assembly, startup); near 1, random; above 1, wear-out. Only in wear-out does age-based preventive replacement reduce failures.
Inherent availability uses only MTBF and MTTR. Operational availability includes waiting for parts, labor and logistics, and is usually much lower.
Important notice: Indus Metrics tools produce estimates and pre-sizing results from the data you enter and from published engineering methods. They do not replace design, calculations or reports signed by a licensed professional engineer (PE), nor verification against the applicable codes, standards and regulations, such as OSHA rules and the ASME codes. Material and fuel properties vary: check manufacturer data or your own process analyses before deciding. By using this site you agree to the Terms of Use.
