Time study and standard time

Paste the timed readings, choose confidence and allowed error and enter the rating and allowances to get the readings needed, normal time, standard time and required output.

Pre-sizing and estimating tool: results do not replace design, calculations or reports signed by a licensed professional, nor verification against the applicable codes and standards.

Method, assumptions and references

Equations used

Readings needed: n = (z · s ÷ (e · x̄))²; from range: n = (z · R ÷ (e · d2 · x̄))²
Normal time: NT = mean observed time × performance rating
Standard time: ST = NT × (1 + allowances) or ST = NT ÷ (1 − allowances)
Output per hour = 3600 ÷ ST per part; per shift = output per hour × working hours

Assumptions and limits

  • Times of the same element or cycle under stable method and conditions; cycles with interruptions should be discarded first.
  • Approximately normal distribution of readings; d2 from statistical control tables for the number of readings.
  • Both ways of applying allowances appear in the literature: on normal time (ILO, Barnes) or as a share of the workday; at 12% the difference is about 1.5%.

Standards and technical documents

  • ISO 7870-2:2023 (constantes d2 de cartas de controle)

U.S. regulations

  • Fair Labor Standards Act, 29 CFR 785.18: rest periods of 5 to 20 minutes count as paid time
  • Collective bargaining agreements often govern time standards and incentive pay (National Labor Relations Act)

Frequently asked questions

How many readings does a time study need?

Use n = (z · s ÷ (error × mean))². At 95% confidence, 5% error and a 3% coefficient of variation, 2 or 3 readings are enough; with 10% variation you need about 16.

What is the difference between normal time and standard time?

Normal time is observed time corrected for the operator’s pace. Standard time adds allowances for personal needs, fatigue and unavoidable delays.

Which allowances should be used?

The ILO suggests 5% to 7% for personal needs and 4% basic fatigue, plus extras for posture, force, heat, noise and monotony. Totals of 10% to 20% are common in industry.
