Enter steam flow, pressure and condition to find the commercial pipe size that respects the allowable velocity and pressure drop. Then size the PRV Cv/Kv and the outlet pipe, which must be larger because the steam expands.
Pre-sizing and estimating tool: results do not replace design, calculations or reports signed by a licensed professional, nor verification against the applicable codes and standards.
Bars: velocity at the line inlet. Line: pressure drop over the total length (actual + equivalent). Green: meets both criteria.
Kv per IEC 60534-2-1 from 10% to 120% of the flow entered, compared with the selected commercial Kvs.

For saturated steam, 80 to 130 ft/s in mains; above that, noise, droplet erosion and pressure drop rise. For superheated steam, 165 to 230 ft/s. With 6,000 lb/h at 150 psig, a 4 in Schedule 40 line runs at about 52 ft/s.
Steam expands as pressure falls. From 150 to 60 psig, density drops from about 0.36 to 0.16 lb/ft³, so the same flow takes more than twice the volume and needs a larger pipe to keep velocity in range.
It is when the drop is so large that flow no longer increases as outlet pressure falls. Per IEC 60534, with xT = 0.72 and steam (γ = 1.33), it happens when the drop exceeds about 68% of absolute inlet pressure.
Cv is water flow in US gpm at 1 psi drop; Kv is water flow in m³/h at 1 bar. Cv = 1.156 × Kv. US catalogs list rated Cv at full travel.
