Start from floor area or drop count and distances to the rack to estimate how many cable boxes to buy, how many patch panels, cords and switches you need and what rack height fits it all.
Pre-sizing and estimating tool: results do not replace design, calculations or reports signed by a licensed professional, nor verification against the applicable codes and standards.
Drops spread evenly between the closest and the farthest, with deviations, slack and drops. The dashed line is the 90 m (295 ft) permanent link limit.
Rack units (U) by equipment type, plus spare, compared with the standard rack chosen.

TIA-569 uses one work area per 100 ft² (10 m²) with at least two outlets. A 6,000 ft² office has 60 work areas and 120 drops.
Use the average run: mean of the closest and farthest drop, plus 10% for deviations and the slack. With drops between 25 and 200 ft, 11 ft of slack and 12 ft of vertical drops, the average is 147 ft; 120 drops need 20 boxes of 1000 ft.
The permanent link from patch panel to outlet may be up to 90 m (295 ft). With cords, the channel reaches 100 m (328 ft). Beyond that, add a closer telecom room or use fiber.
Divide 1000 ft by the average run and round down. With 147 ft, you get 6 runs (about 880 ft) and about 120 ft left in each box, which cannot be spliced.
