Plastics & packaging

Injection molding (clamp force, cycle and part cost), plastic bags and rolls, and corrugated box strength.

Clamp force

Work out the clamp force of an injection mold: projected area of parts and runner, cavity pressure from resin and flow length to wall ratio, safety factor, force in US tons, tf and kN, minimum machine and margin.

Projected area, L/t, tons

Molding cycle and part cost

Estimate cooling time from wall thickness and diffusivity, total cycle, good parts per hour and part cost with resin, press hour rate, scrap, regrind and mold amortization; compare the most economical cavity count for the annual volume.

Cooling, cycle, cost

Plastic bags and rolls

Work out the weight of LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE or PP bags from width, length, thickness, gussets, lip and cut-out; bags per pound, basis weight, cost per thousand and per order; and for rolls, length from outside and core diameter, weight and yield.

Weight, per M, roll length

Box compression (McKee)

Work out corrugated box compression strength (BCT) with the McKee formula from ECT, caliper and perimeter; apply published losses for humidity, storage time and pallet pattern and see the allowable load and how many boxes and pallets to stack.
