Paper stock moisture and contamination deduction

Check every truckload of paper stock: the weight worth paying for after removing water above the reference moisture and impurities above the tolerance, with the amount payable and the monthly total.

Pre-sizing and estimating tool: results do not replace design, calculations or reports signed by a licensed professional, nor verification against the applicable codes and standards.

Net scale weight (truck tare removed), always in lb. A price in the 5th column, if any, replaces the general price for that load only, in the same unit.

Gross and paid weight by load

Each bar is the load’s gross weight, split into paid weight, moisture deduction and impurity deduction.

Method, assumptions and references

Equations used

Moisture-corrected weight = W_gross × (1 − M) ÷ (1 − M_ref) when M > M_ref; otherwise W_gross
Paid weight = corrected weight × [1 − max(0, impurities − tolerance)]
Value = paid weight × price; deduction = (W_gross − paid weight) × price

Assumptions and limits

  • Moisture is on a wet basis (water ÷ sample weight) and impurities in % of sample weight. Moisture is corrected first, then excess impurities are deducted.
  • Reference values, tolerances and rejection limits loaded are examples; those in the purchase agreement govern. Off-grade quality claims are not applied.
  • The result depends on representative sampling. A load with bales of very different moisture needs several samples.

Frequently asked questions

What is this calculator for?

To check the weight worth paying for on each load of paper stock (OCC, mixed paper or plastic film) when it arrives wetter or dirtier than the agreement allows. Paste the month’s scale tickets and get paid weight, deduction and value for each load and in total.

How does the moisture deduction work?

Dry mass does not change; only water above the reference is removed: W = W_gross × (1 − M) ÷ (1 − M_ref). With a 10% reference, a 38,200 lb load at 14% moisture is worth 36,502 lb corrected. Below the reference there is no deduction or credit.

What reference moisture should I use?

The one in your purchase agreement. In Europe, EN 643 treats up to 10% as natural for paper for recycling and lets the buyer claim back water weight above it, so 10% is a common reference. The ISRI (ReMA) circular focuses on prohibitives and outthrows by grade, such as 1% prohibitives and 5% total outthrows for grade 11 OCC.

How do I read the example result?

The 8 loads weigh 156.9 short tons gross and become 149.2 tons paid: 6.5 tons of water above 10% and 1.2 tons of impurities above 1.5%. At $100 per ton, the deduction is worth about $774. Ticket 5525, at 19% moisture, has the largest deduction (about 11% of its weight) and is close to the 20% rejection limit.

How should moisture and contamination be measured at the dock?

Sample several bales per load. Oven drying (ISO 287 or ASTM D644) is the reference; bale moisture meters are fast but should be checked against the oven. For contamination, hand-sort a representative sample and weigh what is not the grade.

What are the limits?

Results are only as good as the sampling: one soaked bale in the middle of a load may be missed. Tolerances and limits loaded are example values. Off-grade claims (wrong grade of paper) and disposal costs of contaminants are not included.

What should I do with loads over the rejection limit?

The agreement usually allows rejecting the load or accepting it with a deduction. The page shows the deducted value so you can decide. Document sampling with photos and lab results, and work with the supplier on covered storage and tarped trailers.
